Our Origin Story
Hannalore and Thomas Hubert—better known as Mama and Papa—founded Hubert’s Department Store in 1972. Leaving New York in search of a better quality of life, they settled in Newport, NH, a hardworking, small New England town that offered the perfect place to raise a family and build a business. From the very beginning, Hubert’s was dedicated to providing the community with quality clothing and footwear at a fair price—all with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

In 1985, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert retired, and their eldest son, Guenter, stepped in to carry on the family legacy. He married Kathy Begin, and together they launched Hubert's Family Outfitters. Soon after, Kathy’s sister, Linda, joined the team, bringing her background in law and accounting to help the business grow.
When their father’s health declined, Guenter’s brother Tom returned from Philadelphia to rejoin the family business. By 1990, the siblings saw an opportunity for expansion, opening a second location in Claremont, NH. Tom managed the new store while the family continued to grow their loyal customer base. By 2008, Hubert's had expanded to four locations: Claremont (1990), New London (1991), Lebanon (1998), Peterborough (2008) supported by the centralized Newport warehouse. Today, the Huberts proudly remain a New Hampshire-based, family-run business. In 2017, Guenter and Kathy retired, with Tom and his wife, Stephanie, leading the next chapter of the company alongside their four children—Hannah, TJ, Nick, and Sophie. The next generation is deeply involved, carrying forward the same family values instilled by their grandparents.
